myth: it's always sunny in philadelphia. truth: don't think so!!! every damn time we go it either rains or is hot as blazes. i broke **2** brollies on this jaunt. now i have to find 2 more cheap purse size ones.
travel green. go amtrak. from harrisburg to the 30th street station, we don't have to worry about getting killed driving on the
s(ure)chuylkill expressway. it's cheaper than gas too. earn some green karma.

you can hoof it around philly or take a cab, but we use the subway (and last time we were there) the bus service. quick, efficient, also green.

the trip was actually a work trip as hubby had to take a laptop to a forensics computer lab (they retrieved data from hard drives buried during hurricane katrina. they're good guys.) they're located in the cira center, which is a hop skip and jump from the train station.

hotels ain't cheap in philly but we always stay at the holiday inn express midtown. it holds other found memories for me: i stayed there in college when my psychology group presented research at the eastern psychological association. clean rooms, yummy nosh for brekkies, and i love the throws they have on the beds (you can buy them too). plus the hotel's pretty much near every place we want to go. (downside but no biggy - cable tv sucked. but most of the channels came back the next day. and it's no fun having a cold away from home either.)

we had lunch at buddakan, and had a great view of the buddha. we got to try the new bento boxes they were offering for lunch - you get to pick any appetizer, salad/soup and entry (chicken dumpling, thai chicken salad and cashew chicken were my choices). you get truly good portions with this, i actually didn't finish my lunch cos i was so full. otherwise, you can order off the menu and they serve it family style (which is what we did last year). i also ordered my chocolate bento to go (chocolate ganache, chocolate almonds, biscotti, muffin, and tiramisu filling, all decadent.)

got crystal mints and mary janes at nuts to you. i wish i bought some of their popcorn and peanuts but i didn't have the space.

did my kiehl's run. yay, i can still get a pot of black raspberry lip balm.
http://www.kiehls.com/_us/_en/home/index.aspx
visited rosie's and got size 1s and 5s short DPNs, koigu for my gauntlets, this yummy soft sapphire blue yarn that i wished i'd bought another skein of but didn't cos it was pricy, a pretty tweedy blue ball of fun, and 4 skeins of dale's baby ull in a salmony orange for a BABY SWEATER. yes, i am thinking about this. also got some cute glass buttons (which actually match a button i bought from there last year) and a button with a pinup girl on it. i also got patterns for entrelac socks, koigu socks, and wristlets. i love rosie's. the store was busy this day (compared to last fall when we were the only ones in there. it took me 10 minutes just to look at buttons cos i kept getting interupted to move when someone wanted to look at the books). (overheard by hubby - there was this motormouth lady chewing the clerk's ear off, and she name dropped the yarn harlot. dear hubby knew who she was talking about.)

then i got the boy whiff, a thomas car that he's been wanting, at the children's boutique. if i had a lot of money, i'd prolly shop here for the clothes too. neat shop. you can order hand knit sweaters and (i think) afghans there. heh, i can knit my own now!

then we supped at ludwigs. it's conveniently across the street from the hotel. the sauerbraten, red cabbage and spaetzle literally melted in my mouth. hubby ordered a beer that had the faint taste of bananas. i don't like the taste of beer, but if i was forced to, i'd order this one. we left with our bellies so jolly.

no trip to philly is complete without a visit to reading terminal. you can get ANYTHING here. i got 2 kinds of soft pretzels, homemade bbq potato chips, and a rubber ball that looks like popcorn for the boy. if i lived in the city, i'd do my grocery shopping here (sorry weis).
http://www.readingterminalmarket.org/
on our way back we stopped at wanamakers/lord and taylor/now macy's and hubby got me perfume for xmas. now i smell like sarah jessica parker. this is the store featured in the movie mannequin. the organ's still there. remember when department stores were an experience, complete with tea rooms? i miss that too. (rip the globe, watt and shand and the boston store.)

then we had brunch at the continental midtown. i had eggs benedict, with sides of fruit and bacon. the homefries are to die for. i also had my first mimosa. it will prolly be my last. i don't like dry champagne. next time we go, we'll go for supper. they also sell a rockin' soundtrack.

across the street from the continental is maron's. i always buy nonpareils and sugar mint creams there. i miss old fashioned candy stores too.
http://www.maronchocolates.com/
i also discovered a newly opened sephora's and bought cargo lipstick in cece (the lipstick has a biodegradable case and i can plant the box and grow wildflowers. woo.)

then we hung around the train station until it was time to go.
http://www.30thstreetstation.com/
remember next time to sit on the right side of the train so not to get afternoon sun coming home. don't forget to pick up car at parking garage across from street.
ironic songs playing on the ipod on the way home: choose life from the trainspotting soundtrack and julie by the levellers.
my body aches from hoofin' it (and we did a lot of hoofin' as we covered as much territory in 24 hours than we did in **3** days last year). we'll go back next spring for our anniversary, and spend more time there (4 days). we still haven't seen south philly, the historic stuff (altho we'd seen it before, we'd like to see it again) and many more cool restaurants like jones and passage to india (owned by the same folks who have the one in harrisburg).
i have more pics to follow. blogspots being a dork about me downloading the eagle and ben franklin bridge.
