when i was a little girl i loved collecting things that had my name on them. pens, pencils, stickers, notebooks, toys, etc. it proved a little difficult since my name was one of those waning 60s/70s names and not as hip as the jennifers and jessicas of the day. when i did find something it was like a treasure to me.
flash forward 20 years, and i still collect personalized things. mostly for the boy now. if my name was hard to find, the boy's name is harder (no thanks to bush the younger). i've found the occasional christmas ornament, coffee mug, and a couple of pens, but pencils and stickers are impossible to come by. i suppose i could order customized stationary things from a catalog, but what fun is that?
picking a child's name is quite a task. this name will follow the child the rest of their life. i write this as i'm weeks away from my own delivery, and i think about the names i've picked for our babies (2 sets, not an easy feat).
before i got pregnant, for years now, i enjoyed reading baby announcements in the newspaper. it's very telling what names are in popularity. it's going to be interesting when my kids go to school, how many kids share the same name, they are so popular and therefore "common". as far as i can tell, the boy is the only "the boy" in his school. however, there will be more emmas, hannahs and logans to shake a stick at (and i pity the jadens. that name goes to both boys and girls. should make assigning gym classes in school mighty interesting.)
and the spelling variations of names! jaden has about half a dozen different spellings. madison has different spellings. when looking up my cousin's birth announcement, there was actually one baby named magickal. i pity these kids with the weird spellings. matysen will have a bitch of a time finding pencils with her name on them!
it's funny how some names, unique at the time, have now become "common". i remember years ago, when i was still working at the county, some of the "new names" that came into vogue. madison was one. i thought it was pretty. skylar was another name that i thought was neat. now those names are so common, they don't seem so unique anymore.
it was around that time that "geographical names" became popular. i knew more austins, dakotas, and montanas than i cared for. and i swore up and down i would never name a child of mine after a state, a city, or geographical location.
family names are really popular now. i guess that's where all the emmas and jacks come from. i shouldn't talk - all my children's names are from our family trees. the boy's name is from both sides of the family ( the first, on hubby's side of the family is over 200 years old). if we have a girl, her name is from one of my gram's twin aunts (sorry flora, too hippy for me). if we have a boy, he'll be named after my grandfather.
then there are the oldies but goodies - the matthews, the christophers, the sarahs and emilys. nice safe names. mom wanted us to name a boy matthew, but that name is a dime a dozen.
hubby and i were talking the other night about obsolete names. hubby came up with herbie (herbert). i came up with bernie (bernard or bertram). it's rare to find names from my mom and dad's generations.
i'm hungry. and the paper's here too.
