the obsolete man

one of my favorite old twilight zone episodes is called "the obsolete man". burgess meredith played a librarian who went on trial for being "obsolete." the "government" at the time deemed books and reading as illegal and as a result the man was condemned to death becos he was of no used to anyone. he is found guilty and sentenced to death. he invites the chancellor to witness his demise, and cameras are set up to witness the execution. upon arrival, the man locks his door and explains that he chose death by a hidden bomb, and his intent was to show the chancellor how a man of faith chooses to die (since "God" is also illegal in this society.) he shares Bible scripture, all the while the chancellor is panicking about escaping. he's released, the bomb goes off, killing the librarian, but not without the world witnessing how chickenhearted the chancellor is. he ends up on trial for being obsolete.

i write this becos supposedly there is talk of eugenics in the new health care reform bill. eugenics is the picking and choosing of who is worthy of life and who is too ill/doesn't contribute to society and allowing those who do survive. supposedly, the very young, the old, and the ill in between would be affected by this. the "undesirables" would be weeded out, via abortion or sterilization, and someone ill, depending on age or illness would be denied treatment.

dear Lord people, didn't the Holocaust teach us anything? this is the cleansing of human kind! if this bill passes, it could mean that if my grandmother gets sick, she may be refused treatment becos at age 85, she is "too old", doesn't contribute to society, and therefore is a drain on the country's finances. my dad and FIL, becos they have had heart attacks, might not receive treatment if they are stricken again, becos of their prior health conditions. my MIL might get the minimal treatment for her breast cancer, or if she has another stroke they'd let her die instead. even my children would be considered "obsolete" because at their young age, they don't contribute to society, don't pay medical insurance, and are worth less than a healthy young adult. hubby and i aren't even immune, since we have prior medical conditions. i resent being thought of as "undesirable" becos i have gestational diabetes, HBP, and am obese. under this bill, i might have been forced to abort one or both of my babies, to limit the population growth. to think that my children are considered "worthless" makes my brain want to explode into a million different pieces.

i urge everyone to contact their representatives to READ THIS BILL AND MAKE SURE SHIT LIKE THIS IS NOT INCLUDED. everyone has the right to life and medical treatment, regardless of age, health history or socioeconomic background. please don't allow this country to repeat the mistakes of years past.
