rainy day

it's been raining steadily for the past 3 days, and we're anticipating more rain (heavy, t-storms or otherwise) for the next seven days.  holy hanna, i wish i could ship some of this out west and down south, where all the wildfires are.  isn't that always the way?

school was closed for the boy, so instead of a snow day we are having a rain day.  the kids are in their jammies, i dug out the boy's old thomas and sesame street and doodlebops dvds and we're hunkering down.

the ground is so saturated that for the first time in 2 years, we have water in our cellar.  it's trickling in from the alley, coming in under hubby's work bench.  our back yard is saturated becos water is coming in from under the back porch.  our rain barrels usually alleviate this problem, as hubby directs the overflow into the lower back yard, but the barrels are filling faster than they can drain and the rain has nowhere to go except in our house.

corner of my house...

fifteen minutes later:

my flowers...

fifteen minutes later...

rain water running in rivers down my street...

poor punkey, grinning in the rain...

days like this call for some soup - this is hearty soup (a dried soup mix i got at fresh life - it contains dried peas, beans and alphabet pasta.  i added a can of diced tomatoes, some carrots and 8 cups of chicken broth).  the boy and i also have a date this afternoon to make cookies, and i found some canned biscuits in the fridge.  sounds like supps to me!

hope the power doesn't go out, but we'll be ready (and honey candles make home feel cozy)...

we live several hundred feet up from the big river, so we won't get flooding from that.  several underpasses and roads are closed tho, making travel difficult, and the river will crest over the next few days.  i bet it will rival Hurricane Agnes.
