good eats cleveland

we ate well in cleveland.  the area is home to several eastern european restaurants, and we chose to eat at those establishments as they are very hard to come by during our travels.  to wit:

sokolowski's university inn, located across the river from the city in the up and coming trendy tremont (said with snark).  sokolowski's is a nearly 90 year old establishment known for their polish cuisine.

reviews online recommended the salisbury steak, cabbage rolls and perogies.  by the time we arrived it was after 1pm, and they were out of cabbage rolls (i called them pigeons, and the lady gave me a funny look until hubby explained).  so instead i ordered the salisbury steak, with perogies and haluski as my sides.  they offer their own bottled sodas so i picked a root beer.

the bottle cap is for perspective.  that's not salisbury steak - that's a salisbury baseball!  it was a big as my fist, and so good.  as were the perogies - i wished i ordered more!  the haluski had bits of green and red pepper, and a hefty dose of black pepper - different from what i'm used to eating, but good and buttery all the same!  sokolowski's give you great portions - i couldn't finish my steak and left a little of my haluski.

hubby picked kielbasa with perogies and sauerkraut.  the sausage was good, and the kraut was tender with all the sourness cooked out.  hubby picked up a piece of chocolate pie (good to cut the savory of the meal) and a black cherry soda.

guess who also ate here...bernie (the owner)...tony...and thome!  Bill Clinton, Ed Asner and Kevin Bacon also ate here...

sokolowski's is open for lunch during the week and for supper on friday and saturday evenings.  service is cafeteria style.  this is a place not to be skipped!

on tuesday and wednesday we went to see the indians play detroit.  there's a lot of food to choose from, from hot dogs to chicken wings to french fries to nachos.  beer flows, there are mojitos, plus fresh lemonade!  hubby got us hot dogs from a food network vendor (i was boring and got mustard and ketchup;  hubby was more adventurous and got one with pulled pork and slaw).  i had lemonade and water (you can bring one bottle of water to the stadium) and got peanuts and cracker jack from the vendors who wander the stands.  hubby got me these fries, with vinegar and salt. they were yummy but by the time hubby brought them to me they were cold, either from an old batch or becos it was breezy:

we also got baseball helmets of ice cream, so each kid got a helmet.  the things we do for our kids!

we had a late dinner/early supper (lupper?) on wednesday.  we ate at das Schnitzel haus in parma, about 15 minutes from our hotel.  specializing in german cuisine, we were in for a treat as it's really hard to come by authentic german food in our area (pennsylvania dutch, yes, but not wholly german).

for appetizers, i picked the perogies...

hubby ordered sauerkraut balls for his appetizer...

i ordered sauerbraten, a roast beef in sweet/savory gravy, with spaetzle and red cabbage.  the portions are huge and i brought half of mine home (good thing we brought a cooler)...

hubby ordered the filled cabbage rolls with spaetzle and sauerkraut.  the cabbage rolls were cooked in gravy and not tomato sauce like we're accustomed to, but they were delicious just the same.
Untitled

i also ordered goulash to go - chunks of beef in a gravy sauce with more spaetzle.  we had it for supper last night and it was so.good.

for our last day in cleveland, we ate at slyman's for breakfast.  slyman's is known for their enormous deli sandwiches, specifically their corned beef sandwiches.  i ordered roast beef and swiss on rye...

hubby ordered the house specialty.  yep, that's a pound of meat in each sandwich.  mine fell out every time i took a bite.

i could only manage half a sandwich and my pickle before the waitress handed me a "wimp bag" - a piece of wax paper to wrap my sandwich in and a paper bag to go with it!  apparently i had "wimp" written across my forehead!  i ate the rest of my sandwich at midnight after we got home, slathered with mayo and horseradish.

don't judge me.

hubby was hot to trot that W ate at slyman's several years ago.  Rachael RayJason CastroDave Coulier and Scott Hamilton ate there too.  Barenaked Ladies sing a song about them!  slyman's is open monday through friday, from 6am (breakfast is served until 11 - i saw many breakfast plates and the servings are ample!) until 2pm - sandwiches for breakfast!  eat in or take out, often the line for food stretches down the block, but we were lucky to walk right in.

we had a great time eating our way around cleveland.  we barely scratched the service - guess that means we have to go back!
