farm show

we took the kids to farm show this year.  hubby and i went two years ago sans kids becos the boy was in school and the kiddos were pretty little.  i think the last time the boy was there was four years ago when he was still in preschool.  every year i planned to get him excused from school becos we prefer going during the week, but i was always afraid it would be refused.  so this year we ventured on the first day it opened, saturday.

we left early in the morning, but the parking lot we usually parked in was already full, so we wound up parking at HACC across the street.  they had shuttle buses running back and forth so we didn't have to walk.  the kids were excited to ride the bus...

the big kid is an old hat at riding the bus, but petunia had to sit next to "her boy"...

after a quick potty break after we got inside, we headed to the food court.  it was early and the crowds weren't too bad.  the boy wanted a milkshake and funnel cake.  i'm not a funnel cake person, but the milkshake tasted like awesome, it was so creamy and fresh...

the real reason i wanted to go to farm show...i wanted fried cheese.  omnomnom...

after winding our way through the crowds to get food samples and goodies, we rode the merry go round...

at noontime the crowds were HORRENDOUS.  we used the backpack harnesses on the kiddos and they were a godsend in the crowds.  freddie's pretty good at hand holding, but petunia can be stubborn about it, so having them tethered to us was awesome.  i was afraid we'd get negative comments or looks for them but hubby heard a lot of "wish we had those!"  there were a lot of strollers or wagons, which were awful for getting through the crowds.  i saw a couple people wearing their toddlers.  had the kiddos been smaller and accustomed to baby carriers and we were accustomed to carrying them, that would have been the way to go.  but the kiddos were great about the harnesses.

we're leaving the show now...the boy was ticked becos we didn't get him a second milkshake (the lines in the food court were awful) and the kiddos were mad becos we made them leave the sliding board area and toy car run...

we stopped off at hardee's for lunch, which was a treat for us since we have no hardee's in our area.  hubby loves their mushroom swiss burgers.

we came home with some goodies.  bee products for me...

hubby loves miller's mustard...

spices from the spice man.  usually i make a list of spices i need, but i went with the attitude of "i don't need any spices..." until i noticed i had no poultry seasoning...and i tossed my cardamom pods last year. and i needed dill...and smoked paprika...and nutmeg...and lavender for sachets...

club sandwiches...oh yeah...

i bought fiber this year!  i got this lovely number from Persimmon Tree Farm (facebook linky)...

it was a tiring day, and we missed out on quite a few things becos of the crowds (the samples, the wines, the baby chicks...).  i didn't see the knits and crafts on exhibition.  but we got good nosh, and we saw animals.  best of all, we escaped with minimal meltdowns.

we don't go on a lot of excursions like that by ourselves, but it felt good to take the kids out and explore our families' farming heritage.  next year i'll try to get the boy excused during the week, becos the crowds are definitely easier to maneuver then!

sheep to shawl competition (follow the link to the pdf for the schedule of events for more information) is on wednesday at 3pm.  it airs live on pcn tv (i usually dvd it and watch it later) and repeats throughout the week.  time warp, last year's first place winner, is our local sheep to shawl group - good lucky libby and the team!
