the birds and the buttons

today when i walked the boy to school i saw our blue jay. he was in a neighboring yard. good to know he's still around. i wonder where the woodpecker is. i miss him.

there were also 3 huge crows sitting on my roof. does that mean something?

as for the buttons, i finally cleaned out the button jug my dad gave me. it belonged to my nana. i found all sorts of curiousities in it. like, 2 button keys, rusty buckles, a penny from **1976 still bright and shiny** and little grubby worms. one big (half an inch long) brownish red worm and a few little mite-y looking things, still crawling around. now, nans has been gone for 21 years. how can something like that still exist in a glass jar? so i sorted the buttons (it took an hour) and some i put in the antique mason jar with buttons from another time and the others i put in a brown bag. most of the buttons were the generic white shirt button variety, but i did find some cool buttons. one set, which were brown with a tan scrolly design, i think were off a winter coat. some were disintegrated, they were so old. i wanted to use some on mom's purse, but they didn't look right. since i found the worms and didn't know if they were the wool kind i wound up putting the bag in my freezer to kill any other young'uns. i also quarantined **2** baskets of yarn that were sitting A MERE FOOT from both the jug and the mason jar and bagged them in a garbage bag and sat it out in the back porch (not enough room in the deep freeze to hold it). it's cold enough. hopefully enough to kill any offspring that might have made it to the yarn. i think they're okay tho. how can a worm crawl up a glass vertical wall?

last night was my second knitting group at church. a few more came and we have some great ideas. i think we'll do the prayer afghans and maybe some preemie hats. we also have a name - TANGLED THREADS. certainly appropriate with the way our lives can be entangled with others. we'll meet monthly until the first of the year, then hopefully go to twice a month. people seem pretty enthused. i still feel like i did a bad thing, starting my own knitting circle, but others seem happy about it, so i probably should stop worrying.

i finished FIL's knee warmers. they turned out pretty cool! the knee part is a bit baggy, and my stitches came out off when i finished the short rowing, but i don't think it will be noticable. i want to make another pair, for my mom, and i think i'll stick with the woman's directions and stitch count.

tday is coming. are you ready?
