ugly is the new black**

**or what the hell happened to fashion? ***

***now i know how vera bradley got so popular

yesterday i went xmas shopping with my grandmother - she wanted to get me my xmas present and wanted me to pick it. we went to wilkes-barre to bon-ton (my family's choice for "fancy" stuff). it's funny - how can there be so much to buy but nothing looks good? TONS of clothes, TONS of shoes, TONS of purses, but NOT ONE THING THAT I REALLY LIKED.

i wear big girl clothes. since i'm apparently in an undesirable clothing range my section was delegated to the second floor, with kids, mattresses, and maternity. LISTEN UP DESIGNERS: JUST BECOS WE'RE FAT DOESN'T MEAN WE CAN'T DRESS FASHIONABLE. honestly. everything was BIG, SLOPPY, LOUD AND CHEAP. i did find some ralph lauren (and i do love ralph, i just can't afford his stuff) but everything was just ugly. hello, some cashmere sweaters? some nice tops that weren't attacked by a bedazzler? i did get a RL top, black with buttoned boat neck, which was on sale, but nothing to write home about.

let's talk purses...okay, now i know why i see so much vera bradley. ever visit a purse department? whoever decided that metallics, patent leather and hardware was in style needs to be skinned and made into a purse. everything i looked at was SHINY, HEAVY AND GAUDY. mom picked up a purse that was almost a hundred dollars - it was metallic and baby blue with these ugly charms hanging on it. i wouldn't have bought it for a buck. then there was the purse that had a huge belt buckle looking thing on it. i've seen less gaud on a rhinestone cowboy. i did find a nice fossil bag...until i realized it looked exactly like a fossil bag i got a few years ago. the designer (D&B, aigner) bags were okay but again not in my price range. i did find a nice liz claiborne bag, black, canvas, big enough for my stuff, on sale for $50. grams got me that for xmas. i'm now groovin' on it. very nice.

which leads us to shoes... i would like a nice pair of cheap ballet flats to look cute with my jeans and khakis when i take the boy to school. i want plain black flats. can i find plain black flats? no, but i can find metallic, bright red, leopard, suede, some with heels, some with cutouts, some with obnoxious bows. mom said that the naturalizer store had nice ones, but of course, the mall's store IS CLOSED FOR GOOD. other ugly shoes included patent red heels (jessica simpson, shame on you), more slip on sneakers to shake a stick at, and shoes that look like torture devices. mom did get a pair of cool slate blue slip on sneaks by easy spirit (love that brand cos my feet are so messed up) - that was her xmas pressie from grams.

i seriously wish i knew how to sew clothes. i'd make my own. i'm a pretty classic dresser (black, navy, black, brown, black, dark cool colors, more black black black). pants is a bitch for me. i can't ever find a pair that fit decent since i have c-section gut. same with shirts - to fit the belly, they're huge in the sleeves and neckline. i'm vertically challenged and have legs like a corgi so i always have my pants hemmed (and do the perpetual pull on the waist since the crotch is always too big). yes, i'm losing weight, yes, my clothes fit better, but that doesn't take into account the loose flesh that comes with the territory.

and don't get me started on sizing. on sunday i wore a pair of suede pants i got almost 10 years ago. i can't buy pants in that size now. the pants i buy now are 2 sizes bigger. i even found a t shirt in my closet that is a size MEDIUM (which i haven't worn since high school) that still fits me NOW. and it's BAGGY. which leads me to believe that I'M NOT AS FAT AS I THINK I AM. wouldn't someone please coordinate sizes!! i hate having sizes flying all over the place. kids sizing is just as bad!

but i digress. i finished my mom's xmas purse. it's really cool. i love noro. it's scratchy awful to work with but is so soft when felted. i'm almost done with the first knee warmer. i figured out the pattern (i hate doing wrap and turns) but i think they'll be pretty cool too).

i wish washing machines came with a felting feature. like, hot water, no spin, stops in 5 minute intervals so you can check the felting process. anyone else out there want this washer too?

hubby is getting his snark on (i teach him well). poor guy got guilt tripped by his mom and gm about different things this weekend - he was really down in the mouth. he got his revenge yesterday when he guilt tripped his mom right back. am i nasty or what?

today is the first day that i actually smelled FALL. you know, that leaf/cold wet earth smell that visits every fall? it's about 2 months behind! demeter should make a perfume of fall leaf smell (and while they're at it, make a perfume that smells like new baby - not poopy milk stink, but the sweet fresh smell that a newborn has).

guess that's about it.
