i had a dentist appointment today and was talking to the one hygienist whose child goes to school with the boy. in talking i found out that parents are sending goodie bags to school for treats for the kids for their christmas party. i just wanted to cry. i have all my christmas presents done (except dad's sock and the letter carriers' gauntlets) and now i have to buy cheap shit for the boy's classmates? i was freaking. all i could think of on such short notice was crayons and fun pads but wrapping 13 of them made me want to scream. so i wound up running to walden's and picking up a couple of books that the teachers can keep and share with other classes for years to come. one was about the christmas story, one was curious george and the snow, and the other was the mitten story that we heard at the library last winter. when i picked him up after school, other parents found out about the "treats" and had no clue that something was supposed to be sent to school. one parent had the same look of horror that i had earlier.
this is the reason why i hate goodie bags. the boy comes home with junk - i mean, the candy's the crappy kind you get at a dollar store, toys that break after a few minutes of use (the boy used the halloween stampers all over his face - they promptly went into the garbage), cello bags that i can't recycle, and everyone tries to one-up the other. i can't compete. i don't WANT to compete. i'd rather use my money towards something the class can use - books, toys, games, craft supplies. we have enough stuff. i don't need more of it, and neither does the boy. i wish the teachers could put a moratorium on goodie bags. they did a good thing with no gifts for them (just canned goods for the local food bank). i'd rather spend the goodie bag money towards that, maybe sponsoring a family or something. our newspaper has a needy family fund - why can't we as parents use our "goodie bag" fundage towards that, and show our children gracious giving? i don't know. if this is what i have to look forward to for the next 14 years - goodie bags, ayso, cell phones in kindergarten - i'm gonna scream.
the boy's librarian liked her candle.
i started gauntlets for the mailpeople the mail lady wears stretch gloves with the finger tips cut out. i thought they'd like something homemade instead of cookies.
speaking of homemade, the boy took his cornflake wreath to school. teacher said it was very pretty. when i picked him up he said 2 girls didn't like the treat. oh well. not everyone's gonna like the same thing.
time to knit.
