since blogger is usually a dick to me and doesn't post pics from flickr like i want, i'm going to blog each pic instead and use this post as filler. no, i'm not posting all 300 pics (and video). just the fun ones.
philly was fun but exhausting. left early on tuesday and took the later train in and got there late morning. after we checked in we ate at the indian restaurant across the street from the hotel. it's a twin to the one we eat at in harrisburg, and as usual didn't disappoint. a few doors down is nuts to you which always smells divine. i got popcorn.
spent the afternoon wandering down walnut street towards rittenhouse square, where i bought goodies from kiehls (unfortunately couldn't use my xmas cert, it can only be used online, but i got good stuff), knitting magazines from b&n, a stuffed monkey that is almost a doppelganger of the one i had as a child except he was much bigger and had a light colored tail (even the EARS were identical, what are the chances of that?), some toys for the boy and finally my favorite yarn shop in the world, rosie's! i got more apricot yarn for a baby set (not quite the same lot number as the stuff i got last fall but i can use this yarn for booties or a hat at least), some blue baby yarn for a set, more sock yarn than i can manage, some long sock circs, some books, some buttons, some happy to go around. walked over to chestnut street where i got more goodies at maron's candy store and sephora. then we ate at this wonderful little polish restaurant over by penn. went home poorer, fuller, and happy.
wednesday we did the tourist thing and toured independence hall first thing in the morning, then the liberty bell. it'd been over 20 years since hubby and i had seen these places. we ate at city tavern where i had delicious pea soup (i'm not a pea soup person but boy was it yummy, i think i'll find a recipe and learn to make it now!), turkey pie and shrub. hubby's the one with the four founding fathers' ales (the lush).
walked over to south street so i could hit up sophie's. fabric row is in a funky neighborhood with tattoo parlors, resale shops and all things punk, funk and alternative. had this been 10-15 years ago i would have thought i'd died and gone to heaven. seeing these shops now make me feel like an old forgotten fart. sophie's was a nice shop and i got more sock yarn and some pretty cascade 220, but i got the impression that there wasn't much yarn there (of course i might be comparing it to rosie's which is literally wall to wall, floor to ceiling, crammed into every available nook and cranny with yarn and supplies.) the walk back to the hotel was agonizing becos i had the most tremendous pain in my abdomen. not a stitch becos i kept stretching from side to side but a terrible pain. and it's not gallbladder either becos i lost that a year and a half ago. dumped our stuff and walked down to jones which sells comfort food and looks like the brady bunch house. i had mac and cheese (so good) and thanksgiving dinner (i left most of it, it was just too much).
the next day we'd planned on going to south philly to the dualing cheesesteak stands, but becos i had my stupid stomach pain and the fact that my feet, legs, and hips were aching, we opted to go to reading terminal and got a cheesesteak from rick's instead. it was good, but the crowded sitting area made me uncomfortable and i wound up cramming my sandwich down my gullet. yeah, that's good for a bad stomach! bought homemade potato chips and popcorn. bought wine for in-law's housewarming present. got a cupcake, brownie and macaroon from flying monkey's patisserie (the buttercream icing was WAY buttery, the brownie and macaroon were out of this world). if we lived in the city, i'd go there all the time to do my grocery shopping. since my stomach was hurting and i was weary (i should be grateful i didn't have my 3rd day migraine like i always get) we went back to the hotel where i napped and hubby ran down to the gallery to get the boy transformers. then we walked up walnut again where we got the penguin corkscrew for the inlaws' part 2 of their housewarming giftie at a going out of business sharper image. knit in rittenhouse square which was FULL of people becos it was a gorgeous day. walked over to the continental and got pad thai, lettuce wraps, and the absolute best mountain of fried threaded potatoes EVER. their rooftop bar was PACKED and it made me feel like an old fart since we were much older than the patrons there.
oh yeah, before we went to reading terminal, we walked around city hall, over to the love scupture, and over to a complex that had an art instillation of gigantic game pieces like monopoly, bingo, dominos and sorry. went to macy's and got a dress for T's wedding - $109 for **$20** when i opened a macy's account.
friday went back to macy's to get a purse i liked. took a cab to the train station and got there uber early. i don't mind becos i like to people watch. hopped the train, got a hot dog and playing cards at the club car, got back to harrisburg and home by 4pm.
i don't know what the attraction of philly is to me. it's a lot closer than new york. it's easy to hop a train and less than 2 hours later you're there. there are cool restaurants. there are cool places to visit. we want to take the boy sometime, take him to the zoo, the franklin institute, rittenhouse square. i like living in the country, but i don't think i'd mind living in the city too.
that's my trip in a nutshell. i'll fill in the cracks later with pics and more stories.
