goodbye bricks and mortar

i really wanted to cry.

the christian book store that my family has visited for as long as i could remember is closing soon. the only way to order materials will be through their main online store.

we'd been going to fortress since i was a little girl. it was a neat place, full of books and jewelry and christian kchotches and stuff. i remember looking at communion sets, the ugly 60s mannequins wearing albs and shirts. i remember when they sold RECORDS and looking for a record to take home (i was disappointed they didn't sell rock music. maybe they do now).

they had bins of pins and book markers. i remember mom looking through the pins and picking ones that she didn't have, and she'd get me and my gram a pin too.

they had children's books and i'm sure i looked at them when i was little. i think i looked at them in more recent years for the boy.

i remember plaques hanging on the walls. in recent years they sold more primitive artworks from 3rd world coops.

i got a lot of "gospel according to *insert pop icon*" books there - snoopy, harry potter, dr. suess. i have all these books yet never read them. some day i will. it's nice to just have them.

on our last trip there, i bought the boy his first Bible. it was a children's Bible that had been recommended by a lady in my Sunday School. today i saw the Green Bible there, which i've been wanting to get but hesitated due to it's "green bandwagon" status. i wanted to ask the clerk if i could see it but didn't. i was afraid they wouldn't have any copies, and i was afraid if i looked at it i would cry.

there's a lot to be said about bricks and mortar stores. i love being able to look around, pick something up, smell it, feel it, experience it. you sure don't get that experience by clicking a button.

amazon and friends have made it so easy to point and click to buy something. i've gotten so spoiled by it, especially when it's for things you can't buy locally. i guess it's my fault for b&m stores demise.
