hoarding seems to be the mental illness du jour. i hate to admit it, but i think i'm a hoarder. not to the extent that you can't walk into my house without walking on useless trash, but i do collect a lot of things, and the clutter does grow.
i used to have a nice tidy knit corner in our computer room. i stored my books in a big basket under the coffee table in the living room. after 4 years of being a diva knitter, my stash and knitting library has grown to embarrassing proportions.
i used to keep my yarn in ziploc baggies in milk crates. 3 years ago i graduated to a large wicker hamper we bought at target (for the wools/good yarns, stored in breathable sweater bags, sorted by color) and a yellow plastic lidded waste basket (bought at a yard sale) for my cottons. now i have stash in 2 vintage picnic baskets, a vintage plaid cooler (that's where i stash the lion brand homespun) plus loosely in baskets in the computer room. it's so bad, i have the cotton yarns from the kiddos' log cabin blankets and bunnies in a cardboard box. it's so sad.
my books outgrew the basket 2 years ago. i cleared off a knickknack shelf in the computer room for my books. at this time i also entered the books into my ravelry library. one shelf became 2. now i'm on my third shelf.
i used to keep my loose knitting patterns in binders. as i am anal retentive, i had several binders devoted to socks, baby things, sweaters, afghans, and household things. a few years ago i got plastic divided folders from the dollar bins at target, 4, for socks, clothing, hats/scarves/mittens and household/stitches. these folders reside in my rolling knitting case.
i store knitting magazines in an old end table that i inherited from my parents. i think it belonged to grams before them. i also keep my sewing supplies there. the table has a pocket on either side, and this is where i store the magazines. one side is for creative knitting, the other for vogue knitting/interweave knits/ misc. i also use an old magazine basket for my current and old issues. current in the pocket in front - old ones in the back.
what does this have to do with inspirational knits? i have patterns that i know i probably won't knit, but i have them becos i think they are beautiful. some of my books i treat like coffee table books - the knits are beautiful, but feel beyond my reach. and time constraint. maybe someday. who knows? i buy yarns becos i like the way they feel, or i love the color. much of my stash are one-offs, so whatever project i use it for will have to be a small one. a lot of my yarn is souvenir yarn.
the projects on ravelry inspire me. one baby blanket in particular fascinates me - crocheted "scrumbles" that resemble paisley, with scrumbles of red ladybugs. people who knit lace fascinate me. i don't think i have the patience to knit lace. people who knit sweaters are awesome. i know i have done a lot of different knits, but what others have knitted or crochet totally knock me on my butt.
