broiled wool

today hubby and i went to the kutztown festival.  we missed going last year becos i was greatly preggo with the kiddos, and i didn't want to miss out again this year.  it called to be 100 degrees there but that didn't deter me.  we bought cold drinks, fueled up the van and hit the road.

we got there in time for lunch and at a family style buffet that zion's grove church, new windsor does.  according to the sign hanging outside, the church had been doing the meals at the festival for 61 years.  fried chicken, "slippery" pot pie, mashed potatoes, green beans and ham, schnitz und knepp, dried corn, pickled cabbage, chow chow, all the yummy PA dutch goodies you could eat!  dessert was shoo fly pie, milk tart or ice cream.  everything was delicious, altho a bit heavy for a scorching july day.

there are a lot of craft stands.  jewelry, baskets, quilts, dishes, you name it, it's there.  i found only one stand with yarn, and i got these yummy beauties:

Knit Picker merino superwash wool/bamboo blend, fingering weight, 400 yards of rainbow brightness.  is rainbow becoming my new favorite color?

more Knit Picker, superwash merino DK hand dyed yarn, 250 yards, in teal, plum and shades in between.  because there's always room in my stash for more cool shades!

i thought i saw more hanks at another stand that sold wovens - it might have been shades of nature, from whom i've bought yarn from before.  but i was so hot, and almost sick from the heat, that i didn't care to stop.

we didn't stay long - it was so hot.  i didn't even get cheese or bologna from my favorite stand, planning on stopping at the actual b&m store to buy some, but i just wanted to stay in the cool.  oh well.  it's not like i can't get cheese or bologna from stores around here.

we stopped at cabela's where i got a couple of tops, a tote to use as a diaper bag, candy, beef jerky, a cute green enamel bowl and a cast iron corn cob cornbread pan.  did a couple rounds at the shooting gallery.  we weren't there very long, but it was air conditioned and felt good.

arrived home tired, sunburnt and thirsty.  mom and dad watched the kids for us and took the boy home with them for an overnight.  it was too hot to cook, and i didn't grocery shop, so we ordered chinese.

despite the heat, it was a nice day.  i enjoy remembering my pennsylvania dutch heritage as much as my scotch-irish one.
