knitting under the influence - a book review

i saw this book in a magazine review.  i love chick knit lit.  i got this book around the time of the carrie diaries and finally got around to reading it.

knitting under the influence by claire lazebnik, is the story about 3 twenty-something girlfriends, their knitting, and the guys they love.

kathleen, one in a set of triplets, leaves her job as an assistant to her actress sisters (think oleson twins), moves out of their mansion and rents an apartment from an acquaintance of her father's, then tries to find a job with her lack of job skills.  her goal in life - find a rich guy, marry him and live in luxury.  she quickly learns that loving a rich guy isn't all it's cracked up to be, and finds the right guy in front of her, when she was least expecting it.

lucy is a scientist and has a dream guy - unfortunately his job is under constant attack from animal activists (think peta on campus). she struggles between her career and her guy.  ultimately it takes a lost cat and an understanding coworker who makes her realize who she really loves and what she really wants in life.

sari is a therapist who works with autistic children.  she meets someone from her past; a guy who made her life in high school a living hell.  when she is assigned to work with the man's severely autistic son, she must decide whether she should help the child, or allow her feelings about the past destroy her.  in making her decision, she not only lets go of her past, but also allows others involved to move on and grow as well.

the girls enjoy getting together for knitting therapy, some wine or other alcoholic bevy and bits of advice.  they are supportive of each other's pursuits, give criticism when needed, and offer shoulders to cry on when decisions become difficult.  everyone should have a circle of friends like this!

while there was some knitting in the book, the story focused more on the girls' lives and less on the knitting!  as a middle aged married mom, i just couldn't relate to the girls' lives - single, dating, working in LA, rubbing elbows with celebrity and the wealthy.  i think i would have loved this book if i was in college...nearly 20 years ago!  but dating, establishing a career...that feels alien to me now.

most knit lit books offer a pattern or two, usually a project that was featured in the book.  knitting under the influence had no patterns to offer, but it did contain about a half dozen recipes for alcoholic drinks!  while the recipes did have cute names; named after projects mentioned in the book, i wish that there was an actual knitting pattern.  kathleen's knit bikini, or lucy's scarf, would have made cute and simple  projects.  most knit lit books offer a simple blanket or shawl patterns, and some even include a recipe for a delectable nosh, such as muffins or cookies, that are described in the book.   i don't drink, so these drink recipes are lost on me.

the book would make a good beach read, but personally, i just couldn't relate to it.  i'm donating the book to my local library - maybe someone else will enjoy the book more than i did.

i give this book ** out of *****
