what i DIDN'T do this summer

ah, i had so many plans for the summer.  doesn't it always seem that summer stretches so long in front of us when school ends, but then the new school year sneaks up, and you wonder where summer went.  never mind wishing time away.  it just naturally happens.

what i wanted to do this summer:

go to knoebels with the kids.  we got there with the boy, early in the summer.  we still can go as the park is open weekends, but september is going to be crazy busy, and i just don't see us going back until next year.  oh well.

take the kids swimming at knoebels.  and go swimming in general.  yeah, this didn't happen either.

swim lessons for the boy  boy do 2 weeks of lessons seem to drag on, spesh with the boy doesn't enjoy going to them.  guess he didn't inherit my swim gene.  hopefully next year i can get him lessons at our town pool instead of sunbury's pool.

farmer's market on wednesdays mornings and friday afternoons.  we did go to a friday market in early june, but we got there too early and there were no vendors, and the one in town didn't have anything i wanted.  we also always went to wednesday markets in lewisburg, but becos of the boy's summer school classes/illness/vacations, we just never got there.  i'm a bit sad about this, as i think it's really important to support our local farmers and buy local.  next year, i won't put the boy in summer classes (unless he really needs them),  and we'll go to market.

a trip to belleville market and peachey's.  peachey's burnt to the ground early in the summer.  they are rebuilding but i bet the store isn't open at full capacity.  lost wednesdays becos of school/illness/vacation.  next year, hopefully, we'll get out there.

the boy would work on school skills every day for the summer, per his teacher's calendar.  well, we started off strong, but as the boy got busy with school and then we got sick, it fell by the wayside.  in a way, he did keep up with 2 weeks of reading camp and 1 week of math.  we tried catching up and all that was left was the boy filling out his journal (4 entries, 2 pictures and a note to his new teacher).  he enjoys drawing, so it should not have taken much time.  if the boy gave it in to his old teacher, he'd get a prize.  i suppose it's more for me than for him, to prove that i'm actually a good mother.  i admit it;  i hit the wall.  and now i accept defeat.

cleaning out the attic/back porch/cellar.  i scratched this off becos for the most part, i did get some cleaning done.  we tidied up the back porch, i got part of the attic sorted.  i have the front part of the attic to go, a quick tune up of the back porch, and then i'll tackle the cellar.  there's a ton of stuff down there that can go for yard sale next year.

exercise for me.  yeah right.  i suppose chasing one quick little girl and dragging a little boy away from things he shouldn't get into count as exercise.  but i didn't get to do any yoga.  nor did i get to go swimming.

go to the playground every day.  it was so scorching hot.  i couldn't stand being outside.  the thought of dragging the kids to the park with no shade and hot equipment just didn't appeal to me.  we did go a couple times, early in the summer, and i packed picnic lunches.  that was fun.  the playground is gaining a small picnic pavilion, and hopefully they'll plant some trees too.  once the temps drop down, i'll take the kids to the playground, and it really will be more fun for the kiddos, since petunia toddles more and freddie beans is getting close to walking as well.

take the kids to the library for the summer program.  we went to the library once, during the first week of the program, and we got there late.  it was a water day too and the boy didn't have any trunks with him.  it just didn't feel fun.  it was also a drag to tote the kiddos as they really couldn't participate.  we missed several weeks becos of school and swim lessons.  the library had 3 sessions a week for the big kids and 1 day a week for the toddlers, but the idea of going to the library 4 days a week just made me weary from the start.  next year i'll hopefully have my head on straight and get the info early on, so we can pick and choose the sessions to go to.  the kids will be more mobile and won't be so hard to corral (hopefully).

go to the movies with the boy.  we wanted to see toy story, despicable me, the sorcerer's apprentice and a bunch of other movies.  we only saw nanny mcphee returns and ironman 2 at the beginning of the summer.  i got to see SATC by myself, and twilight with my folks.  so sad.  i'm sure we didn't get to the movies much becos of illness/lack of a babysitter/goofy schedules.  i think the movie pickings weren't the greatest either.  oh well.  we got to save money by not going to the movies, although i like to go becos it helps boost business.

take in a baseball game.  did it, without a day to spare.  hubby and dad took the boy to a senator's game the day before school started.  the boy had a ball.  hopefully next year we can take the boy to an actual a professional ball game (cleveland?), or at least a crosscutter's game.

eat at ross's on the island.  i think i stopped there once for strawberry ice cream after knitting.  never got there for a meal, never got there for ice cream.  we used to walk there, and sometimes, if it was too hot, drive.  hubby said why bother getting a meal there when the food took so long to prepare.  it was just too blasted hot to walk there.  oh well, saved money, saved calories.

process corn for freezing.  i started doing this a couple weeks ago when mom's cousin gave us several dozen to steam and cut off the cob.  the corn wasn't the best - it was mushy and barely filled out.  after i wasted spent the time shucking it, i got pissed off (becos the kids smeared poo all over their cribs and i had to clean it up, thus ending with me having a mini meltdown) and told hubby to throw it all away.  i will try to get corn this week to freeze, becos i really like fresh corn for chowder and soups.  i have some left from last year, but it was rather tough and just not good.

make spaghetti sauce.  hubby used to make spaghetti sauce, years ago.  it was a mess to make but so tasty.  i'd planned on getting a bushel of tomatoes and trying my hand at making the sauce.  well, we know how far i got with processing corn.  i guess i shouldn't have expected that i could make sauce too.

ah, the best of intentions.  here's to the promise of summer next year.
