when most people go on vacation, they sightsee. when i go on vacation, i go in grocery stores and drug stores. you can learn a lot about a country or location by what they sell in a grocery or drug store.
there was a drug store near our hotel. i remember going in there on our honeymoon and wanted to visit it for old time sake. i also wanted to buy a tin a penaten. the kiddos are just about out of diapers and don't need diaper cream anymore but i wanted it becos it is a fabulous ointment.

there is a cute little grocery store in niagara on the lake, and i found these goodies there. i also got some cheese there. don't the caramel coconut cookies look familiar? i wanted viva puffs but they only had raspberry, and i wanted plain or caramel filled. and i bought a dragon fruit - any ideas what to do with it? hubby bought the mulled apple juice (he didn't like it). hubby likes to buy sodas when we go away. he bought a dandelion and burdock soda from the english shop that tasted like ass.
there used to be a candy shop in NOTL called candy safari. there was an art gallery where the shop used to be, and i couldn't find it relocated anywhere else in town. i got this sugar stash at sugar mountain. i bought a ton of CurlyWurly candy bars. remember Marathon bars? these are their british cousins.
i got the packs of raisins at reif's winery. the ginger chews i got at the grocery store. hubby picked up the cashews at greaves.
a big bottle and two little bottles of reif ice wine. can't remember what the other bottle of wine was, i think it was a rose. that small bottle is grape juice.
the toffee and hard candies i got at the duty free shop when we crossed the border. the nibs came from the grocery store, and the rest of the candy i got at the drug store.
more duty free goodies
i got the black treacle and the toffee at a british/scottish shop in NOTL. we love trying british food products.
dark chocolate caramels and hazelnut hedgehogs from rocky mountain chocolate; two ice wine chocolates from reif.
butter tart, maple tart and cornish pasty from a delightful bakeshop in NOTL.
an assortment of mini jams and jellies from greaves jams. i still have jars from our last trip (a decade ago!) in the other butter compartment in the fridge! this time around i got a few jars of wine jellies.
ice wine and maple teas from greaves, plus candies.
we got these at a little cookshop in NOTL. hubby picked the mushrooms, the mustard and honey butter; i got the curds.
i got the kinder eggs at the drugstore. also got a kinder kid at the duty free shop, where the cashier reminded me of the egg's status in the states. duh dude. these are for the big kid. i think he knows better than to eat the toy.
if i had a million dollars, i'd buy kraft dinner cos we could eat more...
no trip to canada is complete without a visit to tim horton's. we had breakfast there our second day (becos the hotel breakfast sucked) and before we left we stopped so i could get tim bits for the kids and more maple stuffed and glazed donuts for us.
bringing treats home from vacation is a great way to remember a good vacation.
In the UK, a Marathon bar was the same as your Snickers (re-named now)...Curly Wurlys are fab, but of course way smaller than they were when I was a kid ;-)
