these books had been on my wishlist for a while, and when we ordered some magic treehouse books for the boy last week, i threw these in the cart as well.
Phoebe's Sweater is the first of hopefully many books by joanna johnson. phoebe is a mouse whose mother knits her a beautiful sweater. the story is dear; the illustrations (by the author's husband) are adorable - so much detail in the pictures! this is no ordinary children's book - it's a pattern book for mommy (or daddy!) as well! the author includes patterns for phoebe's sweater, a stuffed phoebe doll and a sweater for the doll! i really want to knit the sweater for petunia!
Freddie's Blanket is what drew me to these books in the first place. freddie is a platypus who is comforted by his baby blanket, but realizes one day that it is too small to cover with! freddie learns to accept a new blanket to snuggle with as he looks for a cozy place to sleep. this book is also chock full of knitting patterns - freddie's plaid "grown up blanket", his "baby envelope" (swaddling blanket), patterns for both freddie and may (his big sister) dolls plus outfits, and knitted overalls for a growing boy (or girl!) complete with a knitted hammer, so a kiddo can look just like freddie!
freddie's blanket is sublime - the the story is darling, the illustrations are sweet (complete with mama platypus wearing french press slippers!). i am gobsmacked at the patterns - i want to knit freddie's blanket so badly, and make a pair of the overalls for my own little freddie. i am in love with these books. is that possible?
for what it's worth, these books are not going to wind up in the kiddos' book basket. hello mommy's book shelf!
