when i was a little girl, a lady from my church gave out cheerio treats instead of candy at halloween. what a treat they were! sweet chewy peanutty goodness - a favorite in my little orange pumpkin bucket - i didn't share these!
mrs. e passed away many years ago, but she gave my dad her recipe and he shared it with me when i got married.
heat 1/2 cup of white sugar and 1/2 cup of white corn syrup (karo) in a small pot until it comes to a boil. use a non-stitck pot and silicone spatula becos the sauce is wicked sticky. add 1/2 cup of peanut butter to syrup/sugar mixture and stir until sauce is smooth (i turn the heat back at this point).mrs. e passed away many years ago, but she gave my dad her recipe and he shared it with me when i got married.
add sauce to 3 cups of cheerio/toasted oat O's cereal (i use honey nut cheerios) in a large bowl and stir together. mrs. e made her treats with peanuts and that ratio would be 2 1/2 cups of cereal and 1/2 cup of peanuts.
stir mixture until cereal is coated.
drop mixture by spoonful (i use a teaspoon) onto wax paper and allow to cool. it doesn't take long - not even half an hour.
store in an air tight container - treats should last 3 days (this is an estimate becos they don't last that long in my house!)
these treats contain peanut butter. obviously these aren't for someone with nut allergies.
i hope these treats are as much a favorite in your house as they are in mine! enjoy!
