state fair sausage sandwiches

one of our favorite meals is state fair sausage sandwiches:

it's a little different than the sausage, pepper and onion sandwiches i devour at the bloom fair.  this recipe uses ground sausage instead, and they are open faced.  there's another version out there, with a mixture of beef and sausage and tomato sauce.  i showed the recipe to hubby and he thought it looked equally yummy.
